Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico
Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day – The most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico – which is actually celebrated on September 16.
Cinco de Mayo has its roots in the French occupation of Mexico
The 8,000-strong French army attacked the much more poorly equipped Mexican army of 4,000. Yet, on May 5, 1862,the Mexicans managed to decisively crush the French army,
The victory represented a significant morale boost to the Mexican army and the Mexican people at large.

シンコ・デ・マヨ（５月５日）

こんにちは！
春らしい陽気が続いていますね。
もうすぐゴールデンウィーク！みなさんのご予定は？
日本ではあまり馴染みはありませんが、５月５日はCinco de Mayo（シンコ・デ・マヨ）といって多くのアメリカ人が民族に関係なくお祝いする日となっています。
アメリカでは聖パトリックの日、オクトーバーフェスト、旧正月など民族特有の祝日があります。シンコ・デﾞ・マヨはもともとメキシコの祝祭日ですが、現在ではアメリカの方がより盛大にお祝いする祝日になっています。
間違えられやすいのですがシンコ・デﾞ・マヨはメキシコの独立記念日とは違うものです。ちなみにメキシコ独立記念日は９月１６日です。
シンコデマヨのルーツは、メキシコがフランスに占領されていた１８世紀にさかのぼります。
8000人もの強力なフランス軍は4,000人というはるかに貧弱なメキシコ軍を攻撃しました。しかし、1862年5月5日に、メキシコ人は、ついにフランス軍を鎮圧したのです。
この勝利は、メキシコ軍とメキシコの人々の士気を大いに高めました。
今年のシンコ・デ・マヨは土曜日なので、お祝いするには最高の日です！
